Well, for one, it's nice to know there's others out there. In fact, we seem to be a silent majority of sorts. Adult learning, or nontraditional as it's sometimes called, is fortunately a growing market for many colleges and universities. The National Education Statistics Center has seven criteria for the description of a nontraditional student. If you meet any one, you can consider yourself another nontraditional.
1. They delay their enrollment. This only means that he or she doesn't start their post-secondary education in the same calendar year as they graduate high school.
2. Does not attend class full-time during any part of the normal academic year.
3. Works full-time while enrolled. Full-time in this case is 35 hours per week.
4. Is considered financially independant as far as financial aid is concerned.
5. Has dependants other than spouse.
6. Is a single parent.
7. Does not have a high school diploma.
I, probably like you, have been more than one of these. In my long hiatus from college I took a couple classes part-time. I worked full-time. I did everything but learn how to juggle. It's been a long interesting road and if you're one of us, I welcome you to it.
